Manish Rao’s meticulous work promises the viewer a phantasmagorical journey through imaginary lands populated by strange architectural forms, robotic beings and dream like situations. The artist here is a raconteur, spinning fables that reach into his own subconscious. The stories originate from diverse sources such as childhood narrations of kingly valour to contemporary social crises. Using time-honoured pen and ink stippling and cross-hatching techniques as his mainstay, Rao cunningly creates a palimpsest effect in these dense, dark works. Telescoping objects within objects and tales within tales, Rao has been able to create a feeling of internal clamour and claustrophobia. Although the artist confesses admiration for artists Bosch and Ganesh Pyne, one can also trace influences of surrealists such as Escher and Dali as well as the indigenous metal crafts of India, thus keeping the artist well rooted within the modernist tradition.
Manish Rao, is a freelance artist working in the field of Visual Art from the last 17 years. He has done many solo and group shows in India and abroad. He has been part of numerous workshops, camps and residencies.
