Unison 2017: Inter-House Music Competition

Unison 2017: Inter-House Music Competition

Unison 2017, an Inter-House Music Competition was organised by OPG World School, Dwarka on Saturday 6 May 2017. The annual event saw intense competition amongst the four houses in various categories. Great house spirit, motivation to out-do other houses and absolute commitment led to the successful staging of the event this year too.

Preparation for the event started a month in advance with selection of songs, auditions and rigorous practice. The event saw students of classes IV to XII competing in various categories like ‘Sufiana’ group song competition, solo performances, western group song, band performances etc..

The Sufiana category meant for students of classes 4-7 had students singing beautiful sufi numbers like chchaap tilak, damadum mast kalandar, maula mere maula etc. The melodious renditions of these sufi songs set the benchmark for the event and if this weren’t enough the solo numbers sung by students of classes 8 to 12 left the audience wanting more.

The contestants enthralled the parents with their melodious songs. The singers belted out classics like ‘My Funny Valentine’ by Frank Sinatra to chartbusters like ‘Hello’ by Adele and trailblazing numbers like ‘ Shape of You’ by Ed Sheeran. The young budding artists also showcased their musical prowess on piano, tabla and flute.

The highlight of the day was the junior band, ‘Ocean Glass’ that gave a riveting rock performance that had the audience cheering with full gusto. The Middle level student band “Drawbridge” almost had everyone shake a leg.

The school introduced two new categories this year–Indie mash-up and stand-up comedy. In Indie mash up students in pairs and groups of three presented an innovative medley of songs. The stand-up comedy fused with music then had the audience in splits. The programme ended with the western group song with students of classes 8-12 singing numbers like Sing, Staying alive etc., songs that transported at least some in the audience to the swinging seventies. The talent showcased was remarkable with the contestants trying to outperform each other with their musical prowess.

The judge for the event Mr. Abhiijeet Sanyal, a musician, credited to have collaborated with bands like Indian Ocean and the Sushmit Sen Collectives, was all praises for the brilliant performances of the students. and congratulated the parents and the school on ensuring that the talent of the young students was encouraged and nurtured.

In “Sufiana” category Green House was adjudged the winner whereas in the western Singing category Blue House bagged the first position.

Students will wear their formal white uniform on Mondays and Wednesdays. The remaining days of the week, students will wear sports uniform.
